Which currency should I use in Pakistan?
1. Pakistani Rupee (PKR) – Local Currency
- This is the official currency of Pakistan.
- It’s best to have some cash in PKR for immediate expenses like taxis, food, or tips, especially in rural or small-town areas.
2. US Dollar (USD) – Most Preferred Foreign Currency
- If you’re bringing foreign currency to exchange, USD is the most widely accepted and offers the best exchange rates.
- Other acceptable currencies include:
- British Pound (GBP)
- Euro (EUR)
- UAE Dirham (AED)
- Saudi Riyal (SAR)
Tips:
- Avoid bringing Indian Rupees (INR) – they are not officially accepted and can get you in trouble.
- Exchange money at authorized dealers or banks – avoid street exchangers.
- ATMs are widely available in major cities – Visa and MasterCard are commonly accepted.
- Keep some small denomination PKR notes for local transport and markets.
